Instructions What is needed: Royal Icing Cookie Cutters Cookie Dough Cookie Sticks Classic Buttercream Icing Icing Colors Decorating Tips 4, 18, 101 Decorating Bags Couplers Flower Pot Styrofoam Artificial Craft Grass Embellishments Royal Icing Make sugar cookie dough using a boxed sugar cookie mix or your favorite sugar cookie recipe. We recommend Sugar Cookies from Amish Country. These are moist, sweet, and chewy with a delicate, crisp outside. Equally divide cookie dough into small batches. Roll out one batch of cookie dough on a lightly floured surface using a rolling pin to about 1/2 inch to a 1/4 of an inch thick. Use a flower cookie cutter, cut out cookies. Place cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees 7-10 minutes until lightly browned on the edges. Using a large spatula, carefully remove cookies from cookie sheet and place on cookie cooling rack until completely cooled.
To attach cookie stick to cookies, turn cookies over. Have your cookie sticks ready. You will also need a butter knife. Cut a small corner off the ziplock bag with the Royal icing. Cover the cut corner with a damp cloth. Royal icing dries quickly, so have all your supplies ready to attach the cookie sticks to the cookies. Apply a small amount of Royal Icing on center bottom edge of one cookie. Lay the cookie stick onto the icing. Apply another small amount of Royal icing over the stick and with the butter knife spread evenly over sides of cookie stick so it will adhere to the cookie. Do the same for the rest of the cookies. As you complete each cookie, lay out in a single layer, stick side up, to dry. Cover cookies loosely with plastic wrap and allow to dry for at least 8 hours.
After cookies are dry, they are ready to decorate and make into a beautiful flower bouquet! See Cookie Decorating instructions for easy decorating tips and instructions on coloring the icing. To make cookie flowers, you will need tip 4 to make outlines, tip 18 to make stars, and tip 101 to make petals. To outline your flower cookie, attach tip 4 with a coupler to a disposable decorating bag filled with colored buttercream icing. First, make a circle outline to form the center of the flower. Then outline the outside of the cookie to form petals. Fill in petals and center with stars using tip 18.
To create petals, attach tip 101 with a coupler to a disposable decorating bag filled with colored buttercream icing. Hold decorating bag so wide end of tip 101 is at the top. Holding bag at a 45 degree angle and the open end of the bag pointing at 3 o'clock, place the tip in the center of the cookie. The small end just touching the surface of the cookie and the wide end lifted just above the surface. With steady pressure draw the tip up to slightly over the outer edge of the cookie. Stop pressure and draw the tip back to the center creating a petal. Start the next petal up against the first petal and repeat the same motion. Do this pattern all around the cookie until the cookie is filled with petals. Fill the center with stars using tip 18.
Using the same tip 101, and holding in the same position, outline the cookie with petals using steady pressure. This tip will create a wide, ribbon outline. Fill the center with stars using tip 18.
For really easy cookie flowers, frost each cookie with different colored buttercream frosting. Sprinkle cookies with white sugar for a sparkle effect. Now to assemble the flower pot. We found this cute, decorative pale at a local craft store. You could also use a simple clay flower pot. Before assembly your cookie bouquet, tie a small, green bow onto each stick to make leaves.
Purchase round styrofoam pieces big enough to fit into the flower pot to hold the cookie flower sticks. You could even use flower oasis as an alternative. Fill flower pot to approximately 2/3 full with styrofoam or oasis. Arrange cookie flowers to make floral arrangements gently pushing sticks into flower pot filling. Add craft artificial grass to cover up the styrofoam and a finishing look. Add embellishments like clip on butterflies, bees, lady bugs, or birds. Your cookie flower bouquet is now complete and ready to deliver to mom!
